Our first day at the 'Holland hause primary school'

26 april 2002 - Torremolinos, Spanje

Today was the first day of our internship, which made us very excited. We didn't really know what to expect and what the teachers at the primary school had in mind for us. When we entered the school, we were kind of suprised. The school appeared to be located in something that looked like a church, and the clasrooms seemed to be improvised. A reason for that might be that this school doesn't have a really big budget because it is something extra for the children. All the children who go to this school, also go to normal school days at a Spanish school. That's why the lessons are given in the evening hours and on saturday. The children who visit this school, all have a parent who comes from the Netherlands and they want to keep their dutch on a reasonable level. Becasue of the fact that these children speak a little dutch, we had to communicat with them through Eglish and Spanish.  After the lesson was started and after we had introduced ourselves, we were assigned to do take spellingtests. These were in Dutch as well as in English.  It was interesting to see how the levels of the children differed, and the way they spelled certain words.  after taking the spellingtests, they asked us to help the small children with their reading. This was nice, because the children were very amazed by us. They didn't get where we learned to speak English and Dutch. The teachers also want the children to experience the Dutch culture, so we also watched the livestream of kingsday and we played bingo. It was a really nice day, and all the people we met were very kind! We are already looking forward to our next day at this school.

After we were finished, we walked towards the beach, which was very close by. There we ate lunch at a very nice beach-restaurant, and we walked along the boulevard. The view was amazing! Before we went home, we had to do some shopping in the supermarket to be able to make our dinner. It was very striking that many Spanish people aren't able to speak English. That made shopping and communicating overall kind a difficult. When we arrived home, we kooked dinner, took a small nap, and in the evening we went out.:)
At the club we met lots of nice people, with whom we had nice talks. Communicating with them in English was quite hard, but they did their best in talking and understanding English!
